Macro Analysis

Genre

Dream pop is a subgenre of alternative and indie music known for its atmospheric and ethereal sound. The genre began taking shape in the 1980s, with bands like Cocteau Twins and the ethereal side of 4AD Records helping define its sound. The music typically uses soft vocals coated in reverb, shimmering guitars, and lush, layered production to generate a sense of floating or drifting. Lyrics often deal with emotional introspection, memory, longing, and surreal imagery, but the vocals are usually treated more like an instrument than a focal point. Modern dream pop has a more accessible, refined quality. Artists like Beach House, Cigarettes After Sex, and Alvvays helped bring the genre to wider audiences by mixing the trademark hazy sound with strong melodies and contemporary production. Dream pop resonates deeply with audiences by creating a sense of emotional escape, nostalgia, and calm. Its dreamy textures allow listeners to slow down, reflect, and immerse themselves in the mood rather than the narrative. Many fans connect with it as a soothing, introspective space that feels both personal and cinematic.

This video captures, reality of life in a devastatingly beautiful way. He knows what life has to offer. He is familiar with the reality, but there is no sense of acceptance. Just a search for hope, which is not going to lead him anywhere. Reality is not based on hope. Somehow, he is still hanging by a thread, a hope that is the memories he made.

The essence of being alive is captured in such a remarkable way. The reality of knowing, of looking, and being familiar with your surroundings, being alive. She looks alive, but is that the point of living ?. What if people see you, but you don't feel real?. You don't feel like a complete being, as if there is an ache. Which haunts every coming day.

The idea of being used to life. Settling into a routine where you feel you are making the best out of it. It is organised because in your head, that is the only way. If it won't be organised, then it might be messy, and mess is overwhelming, so you just settle into a routine to avoid it, which ends up draining the life out of you.

Well, in the title, it is stated that this is a comedy short film. Which I somewhat disagree with. There are different perspectives, and for me, this video is about how the human brain tends to complicate things, which can be fixed by living in the moment. In just mere seconds, it's a full circle. We complicate stuff, which only prolongs the process of us figuring life out.t

Codes and conventions

1. Musical / Sound Conventions
Ethereal atmosphere: Layers of reverb, echo, and soft effects create a dreamy, floating sound.

Soft, breathy vocals: The voice is often blended into the mix rather than standing out.

Slow to mid tempos: Music tends to feel relaxed, hypnotic, or drifting.

Shimmering guitars or synths: Clean, chorus-soaked guitars and ambient pads are common.

Minimal or gentle percussion: Drums are soft, steady, and never overpowering.

Focus on texture over complexity: Mood and feeling matter more than technical showmanship.

2. Lyrical Conventions

  • Introspective themes: Love, longing, memory, dreams, and emotional vulnerability.

  • Poetic or impressionistic lyrics: Less literal, more atmospheric and open to interpretation.

  • Repetition for mood: Simple lines or motifs that reinforce a feeling rather than tell a story.

3. Vocal Conventions

  • Whispery, airy tone: Light and emotional, often mixed low.

  • Reverb-drenched vocals: Creates distance and softness.

  • Androgynous or gentle delivery: Often avoids heavy belting or dramatic power.

4. Production Conventions

  • Heavy use of ambience: Reverb, delay, shimmer effects, and soft compression.

  • Lush layering: Multiple instrumental or vocal layers to form a thick soundscape.

  • Warm, hazy mixing: A blurred or “foggy” sound is common, with no harsh edges.

Narrative

The narrative of Lana Del Rey’s “Salvatore” can be imagined as unfolding inside a dimly lit café-bar tucked away on a quiet street. The air is hazy with cigarette smoke, glasses clink softly, and a jukebox hums in the corner as Lana’s character leans back against a velvet booth, half-hidden in the glow of neon lights. She watches the room with a mix of detachment and allure, her world drifting between reality and fantasy. The song becomes her inner monologue—romantic, playful, and slightly surreal—as she turns the ordinary setting of a bar into a dreamy stage where glamour, nostalgia, and fleeting encounters blur together into a hazy, cinematic moment.
Narrative for our video will carry the essence of the genre that Salvatore brings, but with a weird twist of fate. We will portray longing for the potential happiness of our main character. The life she wished she had. The life she wished could live with the love she waits for, but unfortunately, fate is cruel. Sometimes you think you have time, but in reality, you do not even know what the next moment brings.

Representation

The representation of the music video could focus on the café-bar as a stage for mood and identity. Rather than being just a social space, it reflects themes of glamour, detachment, and self-performance. The low lighting, slow movements, and vintage styling represent nostalgia and a longing for escape, while the character at the centre mirrors the tension between intimacy and distance. The café-bar becomes a metaphor for temporary connection and the blurred line between reality and fantasy, showing how music and atmosphere can transform an ordinary setting into something poetic and dreamlike.

Five worldwide hits of dream pop,

Heaven or Las Vegas

In this song, the writer tries to portray the feeling of being in love, how she feels like she is in heaven. The feeling of looking for love. The essence of belonging to that person consumes the person's thoughts, which reflects in her way of living. She describes it as being in heaven, where everything is breathable, beautiful, and every sight is everlasting. The twist of fate here is that she can't have him with the situation she is currently in. She can live by hope, but that hope will never turn into her reality.

To here knows when

This song is more on the instrumental side; the lyrics might be interpreted as being with someone longing for their touch, their love. Maybe being close physically might be the only way they feel loved by each other. Beisdes that, it is mostly instrumental, making it dependent on the audience what they want to perceive of this song w, and what they want to feel. It can either be a love song reminder of the shared beautiful moments, or, on the other hand, it can serve as a reminder of the past, what their love could have been.

ALISON

In this song, the feeling of longing is conveyed in a devastatingly beautiful way. He has her person beside him, always does. Somehow, he doesn't have her fully because she is so long gone in the drug addiction that she can't live in the present. He can't leave his past with her, so now they just exist. Believes he can bring her back; she is a thrilling challenge in his life that he believes he can't live without. This is what he thrives on.

Beach song

The tender moments which were shared without a title, or was that all in the head? This song is about love fading away from one's life. The space increases between two people, whether physically or emotionally. For the explanation of our project, it can be interpreted in a rather different way. They shared beautiful moments, or maybe it was just once, maybe the reality of the person was very different. Maybe the feeling of being loved and cherished was just an illusion created by the brain.

K

Their music composition makes you feel what the writer felt. This song is about longing, the ache of the heart. Even if you somehow end up sharing a few moments with your desired person. It doesn't ensure that it will last. Loving someone is risky,  asking yourself to be vulnerable in front of them Givingg the power to either make you or break you in the blink of an eye.

How I got inspired to use Lana Del Reys Music
Somewhat, she was the muse herself. I mean, her life is a story to be seen, heard, or even felt. Lana became an alcoholic in her teenage years. She was sent to a boarding school; reportedly, it did not help her get better, but she began to write poetry and songs. She started performing in cafes and bars, which did not get her anywhere, but then Video Games got realised and got her the attention she truly deserved. Her songs brought in this familiar sense of longing; the idea of love was seen as something fascinating, something one needs to live for, maybe there is no other purpose than to love or be beloved. It has been her history of choosing troubled men, said she romanticised instability and chaos, which led to relationships that were passionate but inconsistent, sometimes emotionally unavailable or unequal. relationships fueled by fantasy and drama more than stability or security, and eventually our character will realise it, but her approachwon'tt be right. Shwon'tnt end the relationship because she would still remeber good times. lets just see where this takes her as the story unravels.
